Meet the DA

Gary D. Young took office as Lamar County and District Attorney in September 2004. He has extensive trial experience, most notably prosecuting cases in both the Harris County and Collin County District Attorney offices. Gary has tried numerous criminal and civil trials in Lamar, Red River, Fannin and Hopkins counties as well as federal trials in Sherman, Beaumont, and Muskogee, Oklahoma.

After graduating from Paris High School in 1983, Gary attended Paris Junior College and then graduated from the University of Texas with a business degree. He worked as a sales representative in Arkansas and Texas before returning to law school at Texas Tech University.

After living in Houston and Dallas, Gary and his wife, Sydney, wanted to raise their children in a safe community and were immediately drawn back to his hometown of Paris, Texas, in Lamar County.

Gary continues the family tradition of serving his community:

  • President of the Paris Rotary Club in 1999-2000
  • Chairman, Lamar County Junior Achievement 1996-1999
  • Lamar County Coalition of Business, Education and Industry, business chairman
  • member, Christus St. Joseph Foundation Board
  • Paris Texas Exes president 1999-2001
  • Leadership Lamar County class of 1997-1998

Gary is also active at First United Methodist Church where he has served on the administrative board, Staff Paris Relations Committee, Methodist Men, and sings in the church choir.

Gary is proud of the strong work ethic instilled in him at an early age by his parents and grandparents. He has promised the citizens of Lamar County to use that work ethic to see to it justice is carried out effectively and criminals are punished accordingly.
